That legend of New Zealand hairdressing has done it again. Paul Serville has created Australasia’s first comprehensive Salon Business programme, launching in August.
While business education seminars aren’t new to the New Zealand hairdressing industry, this learning opportunity aims to go further. Serville describes the programme as a “living thing” that not only provides immediate answers, but also continues the improvement process. For example, participants are provided with a monthly forum that helps them develop and practice their skills.
I know that great hairdressers can also be great business people,” Serville says. “Our salon business programme concentrates 25 years of experience and knowledge. It also includes step-by-step instructions for implementing new ideas and systems. Every small step you take leads inevitably towards achievement of the bigger goal”.
The Salon Business Programme is a logical step beyond the Servilles Academy of Hairdressing, already a world-class training facility that has turned out more than 1800 graduates since it started in 1993. The new 18-month programme has been developed to provide salons with a “complete solution for business structure and operation”.
Serville says it’s good for owners and managers to step away from the salon. “You’ve got to get out of the business to work on the business. Our business programme provides a focused learning environment, so that new learning can be absorbed without distraction.”
Larnie Muirhead, business support manager, says the programme covers everything from vision, branding and marketing through to client experience, salon performance indicators and budgets. “The learning is presented in a way that makes it easy to install.” If participants are not sure about the full programme, they can sign up to each of the six-month modules one at a time.
Serville is confident the programme will have a positive impact on the salon community. “Too often I see salons that are creative, but not financially successful. It’s heart breaking. I’ve been in the hair industry for 40 years, so I know what works and what doesn’t. Now I’m ready to share that knowledge”.
