What made you decide to enter the NZFW New Talent competition?

Since I was a little boy, I’ve always wanted to experience being part of a Fashion Week. As soon as I heard about the NZFW New Talent Competition, I sent pictures of my work in straight away, hoping to win. I thought it would be a great opportunity to get to know top stylists in the industry and gain more experience in creative hairstyling.

How did you feel when you were told you’d won the hairstylist section of the New Talent competition?

I was ecstatic! It was very close so I was quite surprised when I heard the news. Everyone was very happy for me!

What do you think it was about your entry that made you stand out to the judges?

I think the overall professionalism of my photos, and also the European influence in my shoots.

As your prize for winning, what did you get to do as part of NZFW?

I was involved in the main photoshoot for the NZFW 2010 campaign, which was an amazing experience. I stayed in the Quadrant Hotel Auckland. I was picked up in an Audi to go to NZFW, where I worked alongside talented stylists, makeup artists, models, photographers and designers. The prize also included backstage passes, which meant I could watch the best shows.

What did you do as preparation for working at NZFW?

I did a lot of internet research about current hairstyles, trends, textures and shapes. I also flicked through the latest fashion magazines, and I did loads of practice in my spare time to perfect my skills.

What was it like to be a part of NZFW? Did you get to go to the parties, or was it all hard work???

Every day was hard work from 6:30am until 8:30pm, but after this I was still not tired so I went to all the parties. I really wanted to make the most of my time!

What have you learnt as part of your NZFW experience?

I’ve learnt how to work efficiently under pressure, and that no matter how high the standard of work must be, it’s important to have fun at the same time!

What was your favourite hairstyle that you saw at NZFW?

I was part of the team working on the PWC New Generation Show, and one of the styles was quite edgy. It had a tight braid down the centre and messy texture on the sides, which was quite effective on the runway. It looked amazing with the designers’ collections.

You were taking photos for TRADE as part of the event – what was your favourite photo? How was it using the new Polaroid camera?

I was watching the IBM Designer Selection Show, and the winner of America's Next Top Model opened the show. I managed to get an amazing shot of her coming down the runway. The new Polaroid was great; so easy to use and it produced really high quality pictures.
